Right straight off the bat if you have not seen this film then “Dishonor…dishonor on you… dishonor on your cow!” Mulan is by far one of my favorite Disney films and Mushu is one of my favorite characters of all time. The all powerful Mushu! Its something about the totally lunacy of Mushu that makes Eddie Murphy’s voice acting amazing, second only to Donkey.
Rice porridge, yeah when I saw this I was very very skeptical, especially when you have to cook it for an hour to make it porridge like. While cooking this lead to once again a lot of Mushu quotes from “lucky cricket” and shouting “MULAN!!” throughout the house. Up to the moment of serving when I was outside doing the garden Emily shouted “Ready?” and in full Mushu fashion in the middle of the Garden I shout “I AM READY BABY!” I seriously need to pick my moments.
The recipe called for jasmine rice. Cooking this off with a clove of garlic and a bay leaf in the chicken stock water. You just let that to stew, stirring occasionally.
In the meantime you need to cook off your bacon in a smiling position so on a baking tray you position as needed and cook it at 190c for 15 minutes until crisp.
Even though the recipe said the rice will take an hour i found it actually only took half an hour! So thats a bonus. Therefore i had to work fast. Frying off eggs is easy just add a wee bit of salt and pepper and BOOM youre done. The hardest part was actually the shitake mushrooms.
We baught dried ones and i didnt realise you had to soak them and then cook them off. I genuinely thought you could eat it dry. I dont reccomend this, it tasted like toilet tube cardboard. However soaking them in hot water for 10 mins and frying off in butter it was very yummy.
Once everything is done its a state of simplying adding everything together to make a face. I added spring onions for a beard, sriracha for frekkles and black onion seed for the pupils of the eye.
Whats great about this dish you can go crazy with this. As long as the base is porridgey rice then you can add whaterver you want on top.
When you look at the bowl of rice you think its going to be super filling and you will need a nap after but it really wasn’t after a short break I was able to go straight back the gardening and I wasn’t bloated or uncomfy. It may take some getting use to if you want it for breakfast, but as a Dinner (Lunch time, for you weird people that call it Lunch) it is perfect.
Although a little time consuming
9/10. The time was the only factor
